Home cottage and commercial building owners and buyers, what you need to know about mould.
Inspecting for Mould
Mould inspection and testing has emerged in the last several years as an important indoor environmental service. In conjunction with testing Labs, these tests are performed by trained and educated home inspectors as well as specialists on indoor air quality. As a home inspector in Orillia,Gravenhurst, and all of Muskoka for Done Right Home Inspections I am often called on to take lab samples for mould testing. With this article I hope to help home, cottage, and commercial building owners and buyers understand where and what mould is, what causes mould to grow inside buildings, and the potential dangers of mould.
Mould is encountered everyday in every part of our lives, and we often encounter high levels of mould at times during the year. That musty garden smell after a rain is very often the smell of mould spores set loose in the freshly damp environment. Mould is a natural part of our everyday lives, its part of the natural breakdown of plant matter into nutrients in the soil. It occurs inside buildings as a consequence of air exchange between the outside and inside air. A building or home is not considered contaminated simply because of the presence of mould spores. Only specially designed and built structures or rooms designed to prevent the entrance of mould spores will be mould free. These include operating rooms and clean rooms for manufacturing.
All other types of homes, cottages, and commercial buildings will have some level of mould spores and/or growth. Determining the level and kinds of mould inside is key to knowing if you have a mould problem. Mould sampling provides a way to find out what types, and how many mould spores are in a given environment, and are potentially causing harm to the building or occupants. Sampling is done to help locate for removal sources of mould inside buildings.
WHAT IS MOLD?
All moulds are from the fungi family, but not all fungi ( ie. Mushrooms) are mould. Mould is considered to be the non-sexually reproducing fungi. Most mould spores are microscopic and can be easily sent airborne in great numbers where they can be inhaled or settle down in carpets, drapes, couches or any porous material. Some moulds are slimy and their spores are not easily sent airborne. Moulds primarily feed on and break down cellulose material. In nature this includes dead leaves and wood. In homes, cottages and commercial buildings there is a much wider range of manmade and natural products like paper-facing on drywall board, cotton clothes, curtains, and drapes, wooden trim, structure, and window frames.
Any mould can be almost any color. Their colour often depends on what they are growing on. The colour black, dark brown, white, red, bluish, orange cannot tell you Machinery parts Factory what type of mould it is or if it is a toxic mould or not! Moulds can grow very rapidly or slowly. Based not on what kind of mould it is, but on available moisture, temperature, and kind of material it is growing on gives moulds unique the colours you see.
TYPES OF MOULD
A large number of moulds are able to produce a hypersensitive response in people, including allergic and asthmatic reactions, in sensitized people. In rare cases mould can cause disease, but this is unusual to find outside of hospitals. As a home inspector in the Orillia, Gravenhurst, and Muskoka area I see and test for mould in homes cottages and commercial buildings regularly. Identifying the types of mould I leave to the lab, the only way to identify moulds correctly. Knowing what to recommend to my clients after the lab report returns, means I must understand the types of mould in the structure and their effects on both the structure and on the clients who may soon inhabit the home.
In short there are three types that affect people, my most important consideration. The most common finding in Muskoka, Orillia, and Gravenhurst when I test for mould is allergenic moulds.
Allergenic moulds cause allergic symptoms (Type I hypersensitivity) But they can also trigger asthma attacks in susceptible persons. Modern medicine does not consider mould as a cause of the disease called asthma. Runny noses, nasal congestion, wheezing, sneezing, and itching, watery eyes, skin rash and itching (dermatitis), chest tightness and shortness of breath have all been attributed symptoms caused by mould .
In my mould testing I have on one very rare occasion found Pathogenic mould present.
Pathogenic moulds cause infectious diseases and can affect people with weakened immune systems, such as those who are immune-compromised or immune-suppressed from drug treatment. Such infections can affect the skin, eyes, lungs or other organs. These are considered opportunistic infections that usually do not affect healthy people. Thankfully there are very few moulds that are pathogenic and in the case I found it, it was in an abandoned building with a heavy rodent infestation.
Mycotoxic moulds are those that have a high content of fungal poisons (mycotoxins) and may cause severe symptoms. This is a controversial aspect of mould because little is known about fungal toxins and how inhaling them affects people. Evidence supports concluding mycotoxin exposure can cause mucous membrane irritation and respiratory inflammation, fatigue, headaches, mood swings, and even memory loss. People most susceptible to mycotoxic mould are those who are immune-compromised or immune-suppressed from drug treatment.
Part of the lab report might also include the term Hyphae. The root-like structures of moulds are called Hyphae and can be allergenic. They are heavy and difficult to put in the air except by active disturbance. I will often get lab results with elevated Hyphae counts in buildings that are undergoing or have just completed renovations.
Mould is everywhere.
Mould spores and fungi are everywhere in our homes, offices and outdoors. Mould spores can reach very high numbers outside at certain times of the year like summer and fall. They are also at elevated levels during certain activities like harvesting and cutting grass. Finding certain types of mould and high numbers of mould growing inside buildings is unusual and generally a result of a water intrusion. Excess moisture in buildings can cause mould growth in places like, crawlspaces, attics, bathrooms, air vents, and under sinks. Food sources suitable for mould growth are typically cellulose-based, like paper-faced gypsum board, plastics, paint, and dust in heating and air conditioning systems, and dirty fibreglass insulation. Excessive mould growth needs just available water and a food source. Moisture intrusion into structures meets these requirements handily. Mould growth can occur in as little as 24 to 48 hours when conditions are favourable so it is important to find, fix and dry water intrusion events quickly to prevent mould growth. Mould grows well at room temperature, but can grow at much higher or lower temperatures. Mould can grow in dark places and well lighted places just the same. Breathing excessive amounts of mould spores and touching mould with your skin should be avoided. First rule of mould inspection is if you suspect it, have it lab tested. Keep in mind that only a certified lab can tell what type of mould is present and mould testing requires safety precautions depending on location and context. Perhaps the most important thing to remember though is: if you dont have a water problem, you dont have a mould problem.

Here are six alternative techniques to use on outside wall corners:
1 - Butt Similar Stones Against Each Other at Corners: The lack of outside corner molds should not really present much of a problem for most customers and commercial producers of stone once they decide to use one of the alternative methods proposed here. Our simple instructions suggest that you pretty much do what professional stone masons do--- butt similar stones up against each other at corners. Depending on the stone style, place them right ON the corners as they come out of the mold. This is what many professionals do when installing a real natural stone like a River Rock. Some other stone styles are thick enough to be able to do that with as well, and without any cutting at all. In the case of brick installations, it's even simpler. Since the color and material are integral in concrete tile and brick, it is really difficult to see any difference at the juncture. This is the least expensive way to go. You may want to consider rounding the corner with a file slightly to hide it even further from plain sight.
2.- The Picture Frame Method - Cut the Stone, Tile, or Brick Veneer at a 45 Degree Angle and Join: The best method for most styles of stone being installed where detection is likely, is to lay a piece of the veneer on its side, and cut it at a forty-five degree angle, as you would a picture frame. An inexpensive composite masonry blade can be used in a standard circular saw to accomplish this. Be sure to wear eye protection and other protections as cutting stone and bricks will result in a lot of dust. An appropriate face mask is suggested to prevent breathing the dust created during cutting. To install, join the two angles at the corners... again, as you would a picture frame. Rub some colored mortar into the tiny crack where the two pieces meet. It will be very difficult to find the joint - even close up. If you look at many one-piece corner veneers very closely, you can usually still tell that they are a veneer, since the corners are normally poured in two phases. One side is poured with concrete, laid down to set up, and once set the other side is poured joining the first side. There's usually a very thin line where the two sides meet, no matter what you do. This is the second least expensive way to go.
3 - DIY Corner Mold - Make a Corner Mold Yourself for Your Installation: There are many companies on the Internet that sell products to make poured or build-up rubber molds. The first method consists of a two-part silicone rubber mix that is poured over the master to duplicate and make a mold. The second method involves using a liquid ammonia-based latex rubber that is brushed over the original in layers. It is left to dry and then additional coats are applied to build up a thicker rubber mold. These are very pliable, and usually require a backing to help hold the original form and shape of the mold during pouring the concrete. Complete instructions are available from most suppliers, and there are videos on YouTube as well. This method is great if you have time, patience, and a bit of talent. The rubber is still fairly expensive, and may only make sense for larger projects. These are the methods used to make the expensive molds that may be available at retail for making corner stones and bricks.
4 - Purchase Manufactured Stone, Tile, or Brick Corner Pieces from a Distributor: Depending on the size of your project, or more importantly, how many outside corners you need to cover, this alternative may be your best choice. Once you figure out about how many corners you will need, you can purchase them already made from a distributer. You can then contact your mold supplier that you plan to purchase your flat molds from and get assistance matching the colors to the corner pieces you've just purchased. You can then make the flat pieces of stone, brick or tile for a fraction of what the same pieces would have cost you to purchase. It is a good compromise if you feel you must have cut-out corner pieces for your outside corners.
5 - Purchase Corner Molds to Make Stone, Bricks, or Tile Along with the Flat Molds. This may not make financial sense for most homeowners and do-it-yourselfers unless they are doing a very large project, or plan to go into business making these concrete pieces for other homeowners, do-it-yourselfers, and trades people to purchase. At around $75.00 or so each, one could end up spending a lot of money on molds that could possibly get very little use.
6 - A New Concept - LEASE A MOLD is being introduced soon by one of the key concrete stone mold companies. This may be an option for the perfectionist who wants to make his own outside corner stones with molds to match his flat stones. This will work fine unless they need to make thousands of the exact same corner stones. According to the preliminary information released, the program has not been finalized yet, but is close to being introduced. Basically, the company will lend a set of corner molds to their customers for a time use fee. This fee would be much less than if the customer purchased the corner molds outright, unless they go beyond the agreed amount of rental time. The customer is only charged for the time he is Auto Parts Manufacturers using the molds... up to a maximum of course.

Which Are The Common Moulds And Why Do They Grow Indoors?
More than 150 mould species have been reported from indoor environment. Fortunately, not all these are harmful to most people. Moulds will grow virtually everywhere indoors as long as nutrients and conditions for growth are favourable. We commonly see moulds in the kitchen, bathrooms, ceilings and in the basements of houses and other buildings.
Moulds require moisture, nutrients and suitable temperature for them to grow. The level of moisture (usually referred to as water activity) in building material determines not only whether mould will grow or not but also Auto Parts Suppliers the types that colonize the material. Damp materials with a water activity value equal to or greater than 0.90 (equivalent to 90% relative humidity) are usually colonized by strains of Aspergillus fumigatus, Trichoderma spp., Exophiala spp., Stachybotrys spp., Phialophora spp., Fusarium spp., Ulocladium spp., and yeasts such as Rhodotorula spp. Growth of these moulds is an indication of very damp to wet conditions. Materials with a water activity value ranging from 0.90 - 0.85 are colonized by Aspergillus versicolor while those with water activity values of 0.85 or slightly less are colonized by Aspergillus versicolor, Eurotium spp., Wallemia spp., and Penicillium spp., such as Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium aurantiogriseum.
Is Sampling And Testing For Indoor Mould Necessary?
Yes. The building occupants need assurances that they are not being exposed to moulds that may cause health problems. Testing is important so as to:
to determine the presence or absence of airborne spores, their composition and concentration in situations where occupants experience mould related ill health but with no obvious mould growth,to determine if spores from visible mould growth sources had become airborne,to detect and quantify certain mould species, to determine the efficacy of mould remediation.
How Can We Control Mould Growth?
Mould growth can be controlled by maintaining indoor relative humidity within the range of 30-60 % and ensuring that any water leakage or flood is attended to immediately. Use of biocides to control mould in indoor environment is generally not recommended due to associated health risks and the fact that these chemicals may not be effective against all moulds and are effective for only a limited period of time.

Lost wax casting process is the most accepted procedure for making patterns of virtually anything and everything. This pattern-making process is in vogue since time immemorial! It is an integral part of the manufacturing process. Any new product requires the pattern first. A sample peace is taken out and only after approval it go for the final production.
Even a small button requires the pattern-making first. If you wish to cast a mighty elephant in brass or any other metal, it also requires pattern making first. In the manufacturing process, the only action that precedes pattern making, is the designing on the paper. With the details provided in the design, the pattern maker, call him an engraver, makes the production-worthy pattern.
The second process for pattern making is investment casting. This method is used for a wide range of applications. This has developed into a foremost technique of modern industry. To put it in the proper perspective, the old pattern making industry has been modernized.
Investment casting got the real fillip during 1980 due to the unprecedented growth of the aircraft industry. Investment casting in the foundry industry accounts for 15% of the value of cast metal production. It really is the modernization of an ancient art.
Lost wax casting method, as earlier said was used for making dental inlays, metal sculpture and surgical implants. It was mostly used in making copper and brass statues. Impetus to this craft and thousands of new part patterns were created to meet the demands of the war. Even today this method is used for manufacturing small and big brass, copper and bronze statues.
Pattern making is an art involving lots of intricacies. To become a perfect pattern-maker, it takes anything from Auto Parts Factory 3 to 4 years. Even though computers have taken over the job of making patterns of late, the human expertise required in understanding the patterns for eventually taking out the production out of them, is still important.
In fact, handmade craft patterns do not cost anything. Some sample peaces of the craft are given to the manufacturers and on the basis of that manufacturing process commences. The amount of human labor involved in such craft products is much and patterns come to play their role in the process involved in the basic manufacturing material required for the final product.
Take for example, the production of an item, Christmas hanger-tassel! It is totally handmade, but the beads of different types and sizes roll out of the patterns!
