About Julia

Julia Cunningham is a harpist/pianist, composer/arranger navigating a perpetually evolving creative journey. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Julia began playing the piano as soon as she could reach it. By the time she started playing the harp, she had already fuelled her passion for music and had won numerous music competitions. Julia received her Bachelor of Music degree from The University of Victoria and Master of Music Degree from Yale University.

Recipient of a Grant from the Canada Council of the Arts, Julia moved to France to study harp at the National Conservatory of Nice. While in France, she won several competitions for the Celtic harp and received a performance diploma from the National Conservatory of Nice.

Julia has performed with numerous orchestras and diverse musical ensembles all over the world including The Saskatoon, Victoria & Vancouver Symphonies, Orchestra Classica Italiana, The Russian American Youth Orchestra, The Cannes Philharmonic, Opera de Nice, and The Kuala Lumpur Philharmonic. Special performances have included concerts with Luciano Pavarotti (Pavarotti and Friends) in Modena, Italy, concert tours throughout Europe, North America, Australia & The Middle East, appearances with The Stars of the Musicals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and televised Christmas concerts with the Millennium Orchestra at the Vatican in Rome.

Julia has appeared on numerous television programs worldwide and has graced the stages of some of the world's greatest Jazz and Blues Festivals as "Soul Harpist" to legendary soul singer: Solomon Burke.

Julia’s music combines the harmonic resources from her formal classical training and the open approach of a Celtic Harper with her sensibility to a vast array of influences from the diverse cultures in which she has lived. As a result, her music spans the breadth of many genres, and yet remains distinctively her own.
