In the early 1990's, scientists were studying the `French Paradox', so-called because of the surprisingly low incidence of cardiovascular disease found in France, where people consumed a high fat diet. Researchers found a 40% lower mortality rate for ischemic heart disease among people in France despite the high amount of saturated fats in their diet. Ever since this time, scientists have been studying red wine trying to pinpoint the reason.

In the September 2000 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, Swedish researchers at the Karolinska Institute reported that light drinkers who consumed wine cut their risk of dying prematurely by almost one-third. Wine drinkers had a significantly lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and cancer as compared to people who did not drink at all.

Several studies show that red wine might suppress the growth of cancer cells. A study conducted by scientists at the University of Crete in Greece showed that the phenolic compounds in red wine may slow the growth of breast cancer cells. Phenols were also shown to suppress the growth of prostate cancer cells. The results were published in the June 2000 issue of the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry. French scientists have found that resveratrol can slow the growth of liver cancer cells. The report was published in the July-August 2000 issue of Oncology Reports.

Drinking wine, particularly white wine, may benefit the lungs. A study done by the University of Buffalo on 1,555 men and women and presented to the American Thoracic Society in Atlanta on May 20, 2002, showed that drinking wine improved lung function. Holger Schunemann, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine and social preventative medicine at the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, commented, "Red wine in moderation has been shown to be beneficial for the heart, but in this case the relationship was stronger for white wine." Red wine also had a positive effect on breathing capability but the effect was weaker.

A more recent study, done by the researchers at Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging, reports that resveratrol offsets the bad effects of a high calorie diet in mice and significantly extends their lifespan. This report was published electronically on November 1, 2006 in Nature. The mice in the study were fed very high doses of resveratrol, far more than a person could get by drinking red wine. Scientists warn that people should not be taking large doses of resveratrol supplements until more research is done with humans since it's often true that substances that are safe in small doses can prove to be harmful if taken in larger doses.
